What is a wind rose?

BravoRossoVint2011Our winery name is after the wind rose.  A wind rose will tell you what direction whence the wind comes. They used to be very decoratively displayed on sailing maps. In olden times, a wind rose was used to help sailors know the direction of the various winds.  We partly chose this name because of the uniqueness of the image itself and what the image itself portrays about the NW as a nautical region.

The wind rose image we chose for our logo is dated from 1492. It was crafted by Jorge Aguiar, a Portuguese cartographer. We use various aspects of this image for our logo, from the inner rose to the entire design.
